The term 20/20 is a measure of visual acuity.
These figures are based on the letter charts which are used in the standard sight test. The top number refers to the distance at which the chart is viewed - 20 feet (or 6 metres). The bottom number refers to the distance at which a person with ideal vision can see a letter clearly.
Therefore if you have 20/40 vision then you will just be able to see something from a distance of 20 feet while a person with perfect eyesight will be able to see from 40 feet.
Contact lenses are safe if you have seen a qualified Optometrist about what your individual requirments are. Some people experience problems wearing contact lenses due to health issues such as allergies or medications used so it is important to speak to your Optometrist who can perscribe something appropriate for you. It is also important to care for contact lenses, ensuring they are kept clean and are removed at night to avoid infection. If you experience any redness, sorness or watering of the eyes while wearing contact lenses take them out until the symptoms subside. If these symptoms persist see your optometrist.
Small children can be fitted with contact lenses but the suitability of this needs to be investigated in relation to their condition and the individual.
Macular Oedema is a common visual impairment in patients who suffer from diabetic retinopathy. Macular oedema occurs when leaking and swelling occurs within the macula and causes a loss of vision which progresses over a period of months while the ability to focus is also affected.
General eye examinations for Australian residents, who hold a Medicare card, are bulk billed to Medicare. The cost of an eye examination, for those who do not hold a Medicare card, depends on the type of consultation required. There may be a small charge for Retinal Imaging as it is not covered by Medicare.

It is recommended that you make an appointment. You do not require a referral. Appointments are made on the half hour and go for about 20 to 30 minutes. It is advised that you allow some time for frame selection, after your consultation, if you require a new pair of glasses.
